Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a divorce take in Arizona?
Arizona requires a waiting period after the petition has been served before the court can enter a decree, so even a straightforward uncontested dissolution takes a matter of months. Contested matters, or matters that require additional hearings, take considerably longer. I can usually have your documents prepared within a few business days; the rest of the timeline belongs to the court’s calendar and is outside my control.
Do I need an attorney to get divorced?
You are not required to have an attorney to file for dissolution in Arizona, and many people represent themselves. If your matter is uncontested and you and your spouse largely agree on the terms, document preparation is often all the help you need. If there is a serious dispute over property, debts or children, I will say so plainly and suggest you speak with an attorney, because I cannot advise you on strategy.
What does a Certified Legal Document Preparer do?
A Certified Legal Document Preparer is certified by the Arizona Supreme Court to prepare legal documents at your direction, without the supervision of an attorney. I organize the information you give me, prepare the correct forms for your matter, review them for completeness and explain the general procedural steps for signing and filing. I cannot give legal advice, recommend a strategy or represent you in court.
How much does document preparation cost?
Document preparation is quoted as a preparation fee for the specific documents you need, and you will know that fee before any work begins. Current prices by service are listed on the pricing page. Court filing fees, service fees, postage and other third-party costs are separate and are paid to those agencies directly.
